Adventures in Nepal

Namaste! I’ve recently arrived back in New Zealand after 2 months traveling in Nepal, an amazing country and one worth exploring further (I’m already working on a list of things to do on the next trip).

I was really excited to photograph this beautiful land of high mountain peaks and smiling faces. To start with, I spent three weeks in the Everest Region and completed the 3 Passes Trek, crossing the Kongma La (5535m), Cho La (5380m) and Renjo La (5388m) high passes. The mountain scenery was some of the best I’ve seen, and although the weather didn’t always co-operate for the best photographic light, my comrades and I were fortunate enough to hike for 20 days and not get rained on! We made side trips to the scrambling peaks of Chukkung Ri, Gokyo Ri, Kala Patthar and Everest Base Camp. While challenging, the 3 Passes Trek was extremely rewarding, and something I would do again given the chance!

The true beauty here was the Himalaya Foothills, miles of rolling, steep walled concentric hills. Although difficult trekking, it was worth every step to watch the sunrise on Annapurna 1, at 8091m the 10th highest peak in the world.

I also had the opportunity to explore some of the Kathmandu Valley, taking in the 3 historic city states of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur (each with it’s own beautiful Durbar Square, and each a UNESCO World Heritage site). I was particularly taken by the Boudhanath Stupa, a particularly photogenic Buddhist monument just outside Kathmandu.
